West Feliciana Railroad

West Feliciana Railroad

Chartered by the Louisiana legislature in 1831, West Feliciana Railroad became the first interstate railroad in America and the first standard gauge railroad in America. The railroad would run some 26 miles from Bayou Sara, LA to Woodville, MS.

The railroad was almost completely destroyed during the Civil War. All property, locomotives, and rolling stock were confiscated by the Union Army. Although rebuilt in 1875 and operating until 1888, it was later sold to the Louisville, New Orleans, and Texas line, leading to its addition to Illinois Central System. However, operations completely ceased in 1978.
